Breast Cancer Awareness
Hello everyone,
As a UNESCO Champion for Sport Ambassador with a mandate to promote gender equity in sports, I think it is only fitting that I use the month of October, which is breast cancer awareness month, to speak on women’s issue.
There is no question that as a people, women are making strides in all areas. Now the strides may not be as fast as this sprinter would like but every journey begins with a stride. We see that women are occupying more positions in political governing, there are more women in jobs once considered “off limits” to us, for example, as a person who frequently travel via air, there are much more women now piloting aircrafts. That is exceptional and we must continue this journey to mainstreaming.
In the field of sports, I recently voiced my pleasure at seeeing the West Indies Cricket Board adding women crickers to retainer contracts. I continue to take pride in the strides (that word again) the Serena Williams’ and Laila Alis are making and of course I will continue to urge the track and field fraternitry to mainstream the female athletes as we have so much to offer in the promoting of the most basic yet wonderful sport, track and field.
“Until next time”
God Bless
